False rape case; 4 held for exorting Rs 1.37 lakh in Adimali
Adimali: Police arrested four persons, including an advocate and a woman, for extorting over Rs 1 lakh from a businessman after threatening to trap him in a rape case.
The accused were identified as Lathadevi (32) the first accused, Benny Mathew (56), an advocate, Shaijan (43) and Shemeer (38). The quartet extorted Rs 1.37 lakh from Vijayan, who runs a footwear shop here in the town.
According to police, On January 27, 2020, Lathadevi came to Vijayan’s house in the pretext of buying 9.5 cent plot belonging to Vijayan’s relative. While speaking with Vijayan, Lathadevi secretly captured images of her along with Vijayan on her mobile phone.
On February 4, Shaijan called up Vijayan and introduced himself as a retired DySP. Stating that he had proof of Vijayan misbehaving with a woman, Shaijan threatened to trap Vijayan in a rape case and demanded Rs 7.5 lakh to settle the matter.
Vijayan got scared and initially paid Rs 70,000 to Shaijan. The money was handed over at advocate Benny’s office here in the town. Benny is the second accused in the case.
The quartet continued to threaten Vijayan and they extorted a total of Rs 1.37 lakh from Vijayan in several instalments. On February 10, Shemeer brought Vijayan to Benny’s office and forcibly signed Rs 7 lakh in three cheques.
As the quartet continued to threaten him seeking more money, Vijayan filed a complaint with the police. The accused were caught following an investigation by Adimali Circle Inspector Anil George.
Meanwhile, the police on Friday evening registered another case against the quartet following a similar complaint from a Pathinalam Mile native. The quartet had cheated Rs 25,000 from him threatening to trap him in a rape case.
Moreover, police said that Lathadevi and Shaijan had extorted Rs 70,000 from a postman on September 18, 2017. It is learned that the quartet had cheated money from several more people. The accused will be produced before the court on Saturday.
