Fake Scratch Card: Kannur man complains of losing Rs 4993 from bank account
Kasaragod: A Kannur resident suffered financial loss after a 'scratch card' which he received as a gift through a money app turned out a fraud game. Limnith Mohan, an officer of Kasaragod fire station and a native of Muzhappilangad in Kannur turned victim to an online scam after scratching the card he received online.
On Saturday evening, he received a message reading 'You are eligible for a scratch card' through an online payment app.
When opened the scratch card, he received another message announcing that he won a reward of Rs 4993. When he started to close the transaction due to suspicion, he was directed to another link and received a message that Rs 4993 was debited from his account.
The transaction details stated that the money was sent to a bank account operated by a man named Abhishek. However, he was not asked for OTP or secret PIN before the money was debited. Soon, a complaint was lodged by him at the cyber cell and Edakkad police station.
Following this, the bank authority took action to freeze Limnith's bank account as directed by the cyber cell to avoid loss of more money. Police stated that more information about the scam would be known only after a detailed investigation.
