Fake cops ask for half-naked photos of women over phone; new fraud comes to light
Kochi: A new fraudulent activity was noticed in which young women are trapped via phone calls pretending to be cyber cell officers. The fraudsters contact girls or their parents for cheating.
The caller manages to convince the parents or the girl that her nude videos are being circulated in the internet and they are contacting to inform them the same. As the caller introduces himself with name and rank, most of the people believe them.
Once the family is convinced, the caller asks them to post a half-naked photo of the girl as display picture of WhatsApp for one minute with its visibility restricted for all except for the ‘officer’ so that he can verify the authenticity of the nude video. The caller takes a screenshot of the same and then continues to blackmail the girl’s family.
Most of the victims refuse to complain about the fraud fearing disgrace and this encourages the criminals. The police came to now about the incident after the fraudsters tried to cheat a relative of a police officer in Kochi. Within two months, two complaints were lodged in Kochi City Cyber Cell.
In the backdrop of the new fraud, Kochi Police Commissionerate informed the public that police officers or cyber cell officers would not call anyone asking for personal information, money or photos. They have also asked the people to respond to such calls only after confirming that they are from genuine sources.
