Extortion using fake Facebook accounts on the rise
Kozhikode: More cases of extorting money from Facebook users by creating their fake accounts is being reported.
The fraud takes place after a fake account is created using the profile picture of a real user. The fraudsters will then contact the friends of the real user and ask them for money. Several such cases have been reported.
Kerala Police had issued a warning in September regarding certain fraudsters extorting money through Facebook. The warning was issued after fake accounts of retired police officers were created and money was extorted from their family and friends.
Usually, the money is asked in the pretext of an emergency. Those who send the money online will realise that they were cheated only when they contact the real person.
A Kozhikode native received a similar message from the fake account of one of his friends asking for money for an emergency medical purpose. However, he got suspicious with the use of polished English. He came to know of the fraud when he called his real friend and enquired about the matter.
