Elusive thief falls asleep inside church hall, gets caught
Kulasekharam: Local residents here nabbed a thief who has been eluding them and the police for over two months after a series of robberies. Incidentally, the thief who gave the residents sleepless nights was caught while sleeping inside a church hall on Monday night.
Two months ago, two shops near Kaliyal police station were burgled. CCTV cameras in the shops captured the visuals of the robber but the police could not arrest him.
While the investigation was on, the thief continued robberies in Kaliyal and Thripparappu areas creating fear among people. Two wheelers were also stolen by the miscreant. From evidences collected from robbery sites, police and locals concluded that the thefts were committed by the same person.
On Sunday night, a stranger wearing a helmet was spotted at a house under construction in Thripparappu. However, he managed to escape the local residents who tried to nab him.
During the escape, the man abandoned a bike. Further investigations by police revealed that the bike was stolen from Kadayalumood. A bill from a gas agency kept inside the bike revealed the name and address of a man whom police had suspected in robbery cases.
While police investigation was progressing, local youth on Monday night found a bike parked on the roadside at Padakachari near Thrikkarippu under suspicious circumstances.
The youngsters searched the area and noticed that the light and fan at a Pentecostal church hall in the area were turned on. A closer inspection revealed a man sitting on a chair and sleeping inside the prayer hall.
The youngsters quietly gathered more local residents and surrounded the church hall. They then caught the thief and alerted the police, who came to the spot and took him into custody.
Police said that the man caught by the residents is indeed the thief they were searching for. He entered into the prayer hall by breaking open a window. He might have entered the prayer hall to escape from rain and fell asleep, added police.
