Elderly man dies after auto driver beats up and flees with money at Padassery
Thiruvananthapuram: The city shadow police arrested auto driver Biju, 42, for robbing a grievously injured elderly man in the pretext of taking him to hospital and later abandoning him on the roadside. Police said many criminal cases have been registered against Biju. The incident happened in Thiruvananthapuram district.
Tirunelveli native Subbiah (70) was injured seriously when Biju’s auto hit him near the Thampanoor overbridge. After he was grievously injured, Biju, in the pretext of taking him to hospital, took him in his auto to an isolated place in Attukal Padassery town and tried to extort money. When Subbiah resisted, the elderly man was brutally beaten up. The auto driver abandoned Subbiah on the road and fled from the scene. Unconscious Subbiah was rushed to a hospital by other autorickshaw drivers who followed Biju as they were well aware of his fraudulent activities. Subbiah later succumbed to his injuries.
Biju was charged with murder. Thirty cases have been registered against him involving extortion and illegal cannabis trade at Thampanoor, Fort and Karamana stations. He was released recently from prison after serving a jail term. Police have no information about the deceased. The body is kept at the medical college mortuary.
