Rajakkad: An elderly couple killed their son-in-law who attacked them with a machete at their house on Monday. In an attempt to defend themselves, the elderly couple hit the attacker with a hammer on his head, which resulted in his death.
The deceased has been identified as Shibu (49), a native of Alangad in Ernakulam. Shivan (69) and Jagadhamma (63), natives of Mammattikkanam have confessed to the crime.
Their daughter Sheeja have been living separately, with her parents from husband Shibu for years.
A similar attack from Shibu had happened few months back too. In March 2019, Shibu had attempted to kill Sheeja by hacking her after breaking into the house. That day, Shivan had hit Shibu with a 'nilavilakku' and injured him in defence. A case regarding this incident is going on at the court.
Sheeja is now working in Coimbatore. However, Shibu and Sheeja’s son, a Plus-One student lives with Sheeja’s parents here.
On Monday at about 11 am, Shibu reached the house at Mammattikkanam and got into an argument with Shivan and Jagadhamma. At the time of incident, the two were alone at home. As the argument intensified, Shibu took out a machete he hid inside the clothes and brandished at Jagadhamma.
In retaliation to the weapon attack, Shivan took a hammer kept inside the room and hit on Shibu’s head. Immediately, he collapsed onto the floor and died. Following that, Shivan and Jagadhamma went to the neighbours and revealed the matter. Neighbours soon alerted the police.
Police who reached the spot took the body to a hospital in Rajakkad and confirmed the death. After completing inquest, the body has been taken to Kottayam medial college for post-mortem. The couple were taken into custody.
On March 14, 2019, Shibu had come to the same house along with his 3 friends. On that day, he broke into the house through the backdoor and brandished a machete at Sheeja and injured her on neck. Shivan who reached at the spot by hearing the scream of Sheeja, hit Shibu with a nilavilakku to save his daughter. Being frightened by seeing this, his friends ran away. They were later nabbed by locals and handed over to police. It was police who admitted Shibu to hospital on that day.
Forensic experts will conduct inspection at the house on Tuesday. Accused will be produced at the Adimali court on Tuesday.
