Dead, alone and unclaimed; The mysterious life of DySP
Kochi: Even after two days, the body of retired DySP Alex Mathew (67), is kept in the mortuary of Ernakulam general hospital and no one has come forward claiming to be his relative.
Retired DySP Alex Mathew was found dead on Tuesday around 11 am at his rented house at Girinagar in Ernakulam. He was a member of Kovoor family in Thiruvalla. The life of Alex had been full of mysteries and it continues even after death.
Alex after retiring in 2006 as the Crime Detachment DySP from Vadakara owned no land or property in his name. His 36 year-long-friend, Sukumaran Kartha, got a rented house at Girinagar in Ernakulam after retirement. Many a times, Kartha helped him pay the rent. Until his retirement, he lived in the police club.
In the 13 years of retired life, only few people, Baiju, Omanakkuttan, Johnson and Sukumaran Kartha, visited him. But, even to them, he didn’t talk much and got angry whenever anybody asks about his relatives. Alex had only a few friends while he was in service.
His friend Sukumaran Kartha says he avoided befriending others and restrained himself from talking to friends out of fear of being asked about his relatives. Alex didn’t show any interest in getting married. After retirement, he leaves home in the morning and returns only in the evening, roaming various places on bus.
Though he was a member of Kovoor family in Thiruvalla, he didn’t talk about his family or relatives. Kartha recollected that once he heard Alex saying, showing a land that it was owned by his family. However, no relatives had visited him at his Girinagar house during his retired life.
Another mystery to unfold is about the money he earned during his 30-year-long service in the department. After his demise, someone called Kartha saying Alex owed him Rs 2 lakh. Kartha wondered how could Alex, the man who had no relations, become a debtor.
Though he had a phone, Alex never called anyone. Alex entered service as an SI in the 1976 batch. He worked as an SI in Ernakulam, Idukki and Thrissur and was in service at Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram as CI. Alex was DySP in Kozhikode City and Kozhikode Rural.
Ernakulam South station SI Siby Tom said that trying to find out his relatives through Thiruvalla police yielded no results.
