Customs seize 123 kg gold in raids in Kerala; tons of gold illegally transported daily
Kochi: In a raid conducted on Wednesday, the customs department seized record 123 kilograms of gold. Apart from this, Rs 2 crore and 1900 US dollars were also seized.
The officials have revealed that tons of gold are being brought to the state on a daily basis. What was captured is only a fraction of the gold that is smuggled into the state. Out of the 123 kg gold that was seized, only 19 kg was nabbed while it was being snuggled. The rest was taken from different houses and shops.
The customs department has found that not even 25 percent of the gold that is transacted in the state is brought here legally.
From July, a section of the customs (preventive) has been employed just to observe commuters who travel to Thrissur using public transport and the transactions they make. They will closely follow the activities of few suspicious commuters.
The customs have also seized computers, hard disks, CCTV cameras and documents from the houses from where raids were conducted. They are also recording statements of 17 dealers who were constantly under the radar of the officers.
Illegal transactions will not be allowed
The gold traders in the state were informed of the gap between the gold that is sold in the state and the gold that comes into the state. They have promised all help to bring an end to this smuggling of gold. No unlawful transaction will be allowed in the state. – Sumith Kumar, Customs (Preventive) commissioner
