Customs official shifts Rs 5 lakh out of Karipur airport amidst CBI raid
Kozhikode: The Central Bureau of Investigation has received information that a customs official illegally transported Rs 5 lakh from Karipur airport here on Sunday. The money was taken from the airport minutes before the CBI raid here.
A customs official, who is in the inspector rank, has made arrangements to transfer the money when the CBI team reached the airport. It is learnt that he employed members of smuggling racket who were present at the customs hall for transporting the money.
The money was divided from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh and handed over to people for taking it outside the airport.
Examining the scope of such a plan, CBI officials summoned a few passengers and carried out an inspection. But they failed to find the illegally obtained cash from them.
CBI recovered Rs 3 lakh abandoned money in the terminal which was hidden near the x-ray machine. It is learned that the smugglers were forced to abandon the money as they would have found it difficult to take it outside the airport.
CBI assumed that Rs 8 lakh is the daily bribe collection of customs at the airport. It is examined that the customs officials who are facing allegations over bribery saved the amount to share between them after duty.
According to the customs officials, the CBI raid was unexpected.
Earlier, CBI has received evidence including CCTV visuals which prove bribery charges against customs. The inquiry also confirmed these facts.
According to reports, CBI has taken action to book more customs officials in the case.
