Thiruvananthapuram: A couple and their 17-year-old son were arrested for attempting to murder a woman by pushing her in to a river after deceitfully taking her money. The woman, who knew swimming, escaped with the help of locals.
The culprits were identified as Praveen (36), his wife Manju (32), and his 17-year-old son, all natives of Mannar.
Praveen deceived a Karamana native housewife by promising to marry her by withholding the fact that he was already married and had a son.
Praveen demanded the woman to visit him with the money after selling her property. When she visited him with Rs 1.75 lakh, Praveen introduced his wife Manju and son to the housewife as his sister and her son.
They took the woman, who had Rs 1.75 lakh on her, to Mannar. On the way, they got down at Mavelikkara and went for a movie. Meanwhile, they tried to grab the money but in vain.
Around 11 pm, Praveen brought the woman to an isolated area of Achankovil bridge. He made the housewife sit on the rail of the bridge and took the money from her. Following that, Manju and the 17-year-old boy pushed the housewife into the Achankovil river. Believing that the housewife drowned, the trio fled the scene.
However, the woman who knew swimming, managed to hang on to one of the pillars of the bridge and started screaming for help. A youth who lives in the area heard her cries and gathered the local residents who saved the housewife. Later, she filed a police complaint against the trio.
A police team led by Karamana SI R S Sreekanth arrested all three from Thiruvallam. Police also recovered the cash, gold ornaments bought with the money taken from the housewife and her mobile phone from the trio.
Several cases, including ganja peddling, have been registered against Praveen in Mannar. Praveen’s first wife had died under suspicious circumstances three years ago.
