Child Pornography: 16 social media groups come under scanner, admins traced abroad
Kozhikode: Cyberdome identified 16 social media groups which circulate and sell child porn photos and videos. It is reported that 8 groups are administrated by people from Latin American countries and Pakistan.
Groups on WhatsApp, Telegram and Instagram have come under the scanner of the cyberdome under police. The probe officials reported that visuals of the children from foreign countries are widely circulated on these groups. It is revealed that videos and photos of children between the age group of one year and 18 years are being circulated.
On Saturday, police probing on child pornography through social media carried out raids in 117 centres under operation-P hunt (Pedophile hunt). Following the raid, 47 people including VIPs were nabbed. Malappuram topped in the number of cases after 15 were booked. Meanwhile, Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode recorded 4 arrests each and 5 were nabbed in Ernakulam.
Among the arrested include those who watched, possessed and sold child porn videos and photos. Police also seized electronic devices including mobile phones which were used to upload the videos and pics.
The youth who was arrested by Medical college police the other was engaged in selling the videos for Rs 500.
As per section 67-B of IT act, those who are engaged in publishing material depicting children in a sexually explicit act in electronic form shall be punished with 5 years imprisonment and a penalty of Rs 10 lakh.
Operation-P hunt (Pedophile hunt) is conducted by Interpol and Kerala Police Counter Child Exploitation Cell. The raid was launched to counter sexual exploitation of children and circulation of child pornography. All social media platforms are under the surveillance of cyberdome.
Cyberdom will observe the people who are engaged in watching or selling child porn content through the internet for 10 to 15 days. Based on this, a report will be prepared and submitted to Counter Child Exploitation Cell. They will hand over the report to Interpol for nabbing the accused abroad.
