Cabin crew member smuggles gold with help of passenger; hides gold inside toilet
Kochi: The cabin crew member who was arrested for smuggling gold at Nedumbassery airport the other day managed the act with the help of flight passengers, the police found out. The police arrested Palakkad native Manhas Abulaise, a senior cabin crew member of SpiceJet, on Saturday.
The passenger assigned by the smugglers, boards the flight with gold from Gulf. Then he hides the gold in the lavatory. Once he comes out, Manhas Abulaise enters the toilet, takes the gold and hides it in his underwear and continues duty.
The passenger carries the gold compound in carbon paper hidden in body. So, Manhas Abulaise can easily collect it from lavatory and hide in dress. Gold worth over Rs one crore was seized from Manhas Abulaise at Cochin International Airport on Friday in a joint operation by personnel of DRI and Customs.
Manhas managed to smuggle the gold with the help of Tiruchirappalli native Nakkur Meera Ismath. The 2.55 kg of gold in compound form was recovered from a special pocket in his underwear during a search soon after his flight from Ras al-Khaimah landed at the airport.
Manhas had smuggled gold six times through Cochin airport. He had smuggled gold through various airports in the country in similar way. It is reported that the gold was smuggled for a mafia in Chennai. The Air Intelligence department of Customs in Kochi is probing the case. Manhas Abulaise and Nakkur Meera Ismath were remanded for 14 days.
