Beware of new fraud called 'WhatsApp Lucky Draw'
Kochi: The cyber criminals have come up with a new trick to con the people. They have introduced a ‘WhatsApp Lucky Draw’ in a professional approach different from the previous lucky draw cons. The fraudsters claim that the new lucky draw is jointly organised by the WhatsApp and mobile service providers in India.
In order to convince the people, the fraudsters provide a WhatsApp Winners Certificate containing seal, signature, bar code and QR code, the winner’s name and phone number. Also a lottery number and declaration of winning the prize will be given on the certificate along with name and number of a person to be contacted to get the prize.
The police said that the QR code and other details on the certificate should not be scanned at any cost. If the codes are scanned, the data on the phone can be leaked or money will be lost. All these are part of the trap.
In the beginning, the cyber fraudsters inform that the email ID of the user was selected in the lucky draw. Later, they claim that the phone number is selected in the lucky draw. The latest version of the con is through WhatsApp.
Kochi City Police have warned the public that this is a trick to swindle money from the users. Many people are contacting the police to know about the truth behind this.
