Baggage theft at Karipur: Suspicion on international gang
Karipur: There are clues that lead to the involvement of international gangs in the recent incidents of theft in the baggage of air passengers at Kozhikode airport. Some Dubai-based gangs who have supporters in Kozhikode are under suspicion. Some marks found on the baggage from which the expensive items were lost underlined the doubt.
The authorities are checking the connection between the staff at the X-ray scanning section of the Dubai airport and the ground staff at Kozhikode airport. The staff of X-ray wing of Dubai airport can correctly identify the items inside the baggage. They put some marks on the baggage containing expensive items. Later, the gang members at Kozhikode take the items from the bags.
Such baggages are kept aside while unloading from the flight container. The items are stolen after the security personnel and flight company staff leave the place. The passengers who lost their items the other day are said to have received their baggage very late. Year ago, when similar incidents were reported in the airports, Air India had conducted a probe centering Dubai and Kozhikode. Some of the staff involved in the theft were transferred then, who are suspected to have returned to Kozhikode. The baggages are lost from Air India flight only.
Air India sought the help of Dubai airport authorities in connection with the theft in the passenger baggages. Air India has asked them to check the CCTV footages of the second terminal and to conduct an inquiry. Majority of the staff at this terminal are natives of Pakistan and Bangladesh. The employees who load the luggage on the flight are under suspicion. But they cannot identify the baggage containing expensive items, which is why the X-ray wing claim of not knowing anything of the theft is ruled out.
