Auto driver commits suicide after setting ablaze two in Kochi
Kochi: An autorickshaw driver committed suicide after setting ablaze two other persons in Vaduthala here. The auto driver was identified as Philip (64) residing at Pathuveettil in Pachalam. The police said that Philip was under treatment for mental disorder.
The incident took place on Wednesday evening at around 6.45 pm. Philip arrived at Shanmughapuram and threw a petrol bomb at the street stall of Pankajakshan, a neighbour of Philip. As the gas stove in the stall caught fire, it spread over an employee of Lourdes hospital Rejin Das who came to the stall.
After this, Philip went to the auto stand in Shanmughapuram and tried to set on fire the security staff of the bank nearby, but he fled from the scene. Enraged Philip also attempted to set afire his neighbour's house in Pachalam, but his attempt failed.
Then he went to Vaduthala, poured petrol on his body and auto rickshaw and set ablaze. The fire force personnel from Ernakulam Club Road fire station arrived to extinguish the fire and found Philip dead. The body was shifted to Ernakulam general hospital.
Philip was under treatment in Lourdes hospital for three months. Ernakulam North SI V B Anas said that the man's prima facie plan was to kill all with whom he is not in good terms and then commit suicide. He had some issues with the security staff regarding parking of vehicle in the stand which led to the attack on him, he said.
Lourdes hospital authorities stated that Ezhupunna native Rejin Das (34) sustained 75 percent burn injuries and is in ICU. Pankajakshan (65) who also injured in the attack was shifted to ward.
