60 yr-old man cheats visually impaired woman promising marriage, loots Rs 2 lakh, 5 sovereign gold
Thrissur: A 60-year-old man was booked for cheating a visually impaired woman here by giving a false promise of marriage and looting Rs 2 lakh and 5 sovereigns of gold. The accused is identified as Alappuzha Kattachal native Prakash Kumar.
He took the woman, a native of Thrissur with him on June 10, 2020 after promising to marry her. But he abandoned her after looting the valuables. Peechi police registered a case against Prakash Kumar over charges of betrayal as per the complaint filed by the woman.
The man befriended the visually impaired woman through WhatsApp. As he was affectionate she trusted him and moved with him. In the statement to police, the woman told that she decided to live with Prakash as her parents died and her relatives were not taking care of her.
She was initially taken to the places of Prakash’s friends. When insisted on marriage, he agreed to move to a flat at Vyttila in October. Later, they moved to a rented house in Thrissur. But he made her pay the advance amount and rent of the new house in Thrissur. Even the agreement was written in her name.
“I realised that I was being exploited after he started to take my money for all the expenses,” she told mathrubhumi.com.
Prakash said he did not have an Aadhaar card when she asked to legalise their marriage. He left her in January 2021.
When he abandoned her, she realised that all her savings were missing. Apart from betrayal, police also booked him for theft charges.
“Prakash was using my ATM card. I could not figure out how much he withdrew each time. I gave him my gold bangle too when he asked. I trusted him that much,” she said.
When enquired about Prakash, she found that he similarly cheated many women. It is learned that Prakash left his native place after being booked in financial fraud and cheating women with false promises of marriage. Following this, the woman filed a complaint with Peechi police.
After filing the complaint, Prakash phoned me as expressing his willingness to marry me. He also threatened me, she added. After receiving the threat, she keeps her doors and windows shut in fear.
“My only income is the social welfare pension. I have to pay Rs 3000 as house rent. Though some are friends are helping me, I don’t know how to live in such a situation,” said the woman.
In the complaint with the police and women’s commission, the woman requested security and intervention to recover the gold and money from Prakash Kumar.
“When women’s commission summoned him for a sitting, he challenged me that he is not bothered about the case as it will take time to settle. He looted my bank balance through the ATM card,” she complained.
Following the case and issues, the house owner is asking her to vacate the house. The poor woman is seeking the help of kind-hearted people to survive amidst the issues.
