Handling comedy with elan
The strength of Biju Menon's films is the comedy arising out of perplexing situations. In many films, his glance or smile is enough to evoke thunderous laughter. After the box office success of 'Vellimoonga' in which he played the hero, Biju Menon's new film 'Salt Mango Tree' is awaiting release.
Biju Menon talks about his new film.
After Vellimoonga, you are playing the hero's role in Salt Mango Tree. Does this film also give importance to comedy like the last one?
I had made up my mind that my next film should entertain the audience in every way. I also enquired constantly for this. "Salt Mango Tree" is a family story presented in a humorous way. The setting or atmosphere of this film is believable.
We heard that lot of offers had come up after the success of Vellimoonga.
That's correct. However, a majority of those were cast in the same mould of Vellimoonga. I did not take up many such offers to avoid the boredom of repetition. After hearing several such stories, I was confident to do this story only. The producer of this film is director Shajoon Kariyal, who is my friend too.
On the story of the film.
This is a film which examines the anxieties of today's middle class families. The common man's tension and anxiety while struggling to bring up their children and to provide them good education, can be seen in the film. Humor runs parallel to the serious tone of the movie. Both of them combine to make the film interesting.
'Salt Mango Tree'... The connection between the title and the story?
Parents who does not know English insist in sending their children to English Medium school. Knowledge of English language is a topic in this film. In that sense, the title 'Salt Mango Tree' gives the punch of a satire.
About the director of the film?
Rajesh Nair , the director of the film, had done 'Escape to Uganda' earlier. This film is based on a Bengali novel. The novelty of this film is that it presents a simple topic interestingly.
We are able to know the hero closely when we see the film as we encounter several people like him in our day- to- day life.
Are you feeling more responsibility because it is a film giving more importance to the hero?
Apart from the hero, all other characters have importance in this film. More than the hero, it is the totality of the film that is important.
Suhasini is also portraying an important character in the film.
Suhasini is portraying a strong character in the film. . We were apprehensive while approaching her. After hearing the story, she promised to do it. She has portrayed the character beautifully.
Has the Biju Menon- Kunchacko Boban team parted ways?
Never. After Madhura Naranga, we are waiting for the next subject. If we get a good subject, we will work together again.
You appeared in a guest role in the film Kunhiramayanam.
When they called me for a guest role in the new generation film, I withdrew initially. However, they were ready to wait for me. The shooting was planned according to my time schedule after a three month wait. It was an interesting experience. A new vigour will engulf us when we work with young generation. I enjoyed it.
Biju Menon has to compete with new generation youths in the theatre?
We must compete with new thoughts. This will prompt us to stay updated. If not, we will become old. Instead of standing apart, we should try to stand along with them. I accept novel stories without a second thought. This is my present policy.
This is an age when viewers accept good films wholeheartedly. The success of Ennu Ninte Moideen and Pathemari proves this.
The viewers are waiting patiently for Biju Menon- Pazhasshi Raja team's Anarkali.
Anarkali is scriptwriter Sachi's first film as a director. Around three years of preparations were done for this film.
Along with Prithviraj, I am happy to be play a part in the interesting film .
It's being heard that you are going to essay the role of Asif Ali's father in the next film "Anuraga Karikkin Vellam"
"Anuraga Karikkin Vellam" tells the story of the soulful relationship between the father and son . Humour element is predominant in the film. I am focussing on the character, not the age. Hence, I am not taking the image of father - son seriously. My aim is doing good films.
