A top police officer in Chennai proved to be a perpetual nuisance to one of the lady IPS officers here. He forcefully hugged the woman and tried to take photos on his mobile camera in spite of her protests. This created a furore in the Vigilance wing of the police.
S Murugan, Joint Director of Vigilance in Chennai, is now in the dock for his misconduct after the lady officer took up the case with higher authorities.
When a case was registered against Murugan in this regard, he challenged it in the High Court. But the Madras High Court took serious note of the incident and directed the government to take appropriate action and sternly deal with him for serious misconduct and sexual advancement charges.
The court said, “if this is the situation a lady IPS officer faces, then what will be the fate of ordinary woman employees within the government?”
“Her complaint is serious. It alleges of sexual harassment. It cannot be brushed aside. She must be served justice, otherwise the course of law will be seriously jeopardized,” observed the court.
HC further directed the government to install CCTV cameras in the chamber and office rooms of all higher officials.
