Allahabad HC initiates contempt of court case against lawyer for calling judges ‘goondas’
The disorderly behaviour of a lawyer shocked the judges and other lawyers at Allahabad high court. Adv Ashok Pande’s behaviour was unruly and he abused the judges and interfered with the administration of justice.
“You your lordships are goondas. You behave like goondas. Indecent!” the lawyer shouted in an open court room.
The court there upon took suo moto contempt and directed him to appear in person on August 31 to answer the charges.
The lawyer had barged in when the court was hearing a case. The lawyer was in civil dress not even properly dressed. The court asked him to put the buttons of his shirt and told that you are not authorized to appear in this dress when there is a dress code in force.
Ashok Pande angrily replied that he was appearing in person as he had already filed a petition to get the dress code changed as it is high time we got rid of it. When many countries outside India have opted for a simple way of dressing while the country still adheres to a colonial style, he said.
The court observed that the lawyer’s behaviour was most unbecoming and took strong exception to it. The court directed the bar council to examine his antecedents and report by August 31.
