Summer Survivors is a Lithuanian movie directed by Marija Kavtaradze. It is a road film which delves into the mysterious depths of mind. It is a psychological movie that focuses on mental illness from a different perspective. The movie is about a journey that changes the lives of three people.
Indre, a psychology post graduate reaches a mental hospital for her research studies. She is compelled to take two young patients into a seaside hospital that is far away. One of the patients, Paulius, is suffering from bipolar disorder and the other is Juste, a girl who had just attempted suicide. Paulius is impulsive and has continuous mood swings. Most of the times, he is seen pleasant and always talking. On the contrary, Juste is silent and seems depressive. The journey takes three of them closer and they influence each other’s way of looking at life.
The film moves through a line which lies between sanity and insanity. Often, that line is blurred that it is the abnormal young man who makes Indre understand the thoughts that was going through her mind. In the journey, three of them get into the sources of their traumas, address them and are on the path of healing. The movie is an uplifting and pleasant experience. It is a bittersweet story that shows the relief that the mentally ill people get when they are allowed to travel and mingle with other people. It also shows the difficulty they face in overcoming their condition and controlling themselves. The story is full of hope that life can get better. It shows how individuals in similar situations can heal each other which is more powerful than any treatment.
The film is mainly progressing through three people: the psychologist and the two patients. Indre Patkauskaite (psychologist) has played well as the confused and weird individual. The performance of Paulius Markevicius was the flesh and blood of the movie as he was the enlightening element in it. Juste has depicted the complex states of mind that a depressed individual goes through with meticulous details. Overall, ‘Summer Survivors’ is an emotionally-packed and inspiring tale.
