Oru Kuttanadan Blog: A blank blog | Movie Rating : 2/5
At least some of them might be thinking that Malayalam cinema has travelled a great distance ahead. But, it hasn’t. It is still in a pathetic condition as it spends Rs 5-8 crore and 2 and half hours to find the father of a child conceived through an illicit relationship. Kuttanadan Blog was the first film scripted and directed by Sethu, one among the Sachi-Sethu duo who entered the industry as co-script writers. Sachi had made a hit with ‘Anarkali’, his debut directorial venture. Mammootty starrer ‘Kuttanadan Blog’ was scripted by Sethu after the movies like Cousins, Achayans and Salam Kashmir. Now, I can only say that this one is better than them and the direction is better than the screenplay.
In a one line, an expat is talking about Kuttanad after returning to his homeland. He is using blog to say this story as it is popular among the expats. But, story is the old wine in a new bottle. Mammootty plays Hari Kaimal, who distributes goodness in wholesale by visiting many homes in a BMW car. Though, his job is not mentioned in the movie, he is a role model to all youngsters in Kuttanad. Hari is always at service for youth as he helps them get free WiFi, teach them how to love and elope. He is also a ladies man. The movie doesn’t have anything to write at least a single page blog.
Anyone can understand with simple logic that the movie has a typical formula of an adjusted script and a super star. It has some good humorous scenes only in the beginning. The movie is progressing through the expat couples performed by Sunny Wayne and Ananya who read the blog enjoying coffee or juice. These two roles would have been included only because the movie has blog in its name. Likewise, the movie doesn’t have any connection with Kuttanad except the greenery shown in its title song. One can allege that the movie is about Kuttanad as each scene has backwaters, canal or fields. Hari in Blog is a Mammootty version of Puramanayil Chandran performed by Mohanlal in ‘Mampazhakkalam’. Though there wouldn’t be any use, they could have released before 10 years.
Mammootty and many young actors have filled the movie. It has a big row of actors which include Lalu Alex, Raai Laxmi, Shamna Kasim, Anu Sithara, Swasthika, Gregory, Nedumudi Venu and Jude Antony Joseph. Though the presence of everyone is created in all frames, only Mammooty has the major role to play. Shamna Kasim played the role of a police officer Shamna, who reminds of a dancer than a police officer in her makeup and body language, has only helped to make the movie monotonous.
When the visuals of Pradeep Nair met the standard, the music by Sreenath Sivasankaran was average.
