Mammootty’s ‘Uncle’ turns a mirror to the society l Movie Rating: 3/5
Recently, a father and daughters were made victims of moral policing after a group of autorickshaw drivers allegedly harassed and attacked them at Kalpetta. But moral policing turned a subject for the movie ‘Uncle’ before the incident.
Debutant Director Girish Damodar and actor turned screenwriter Joy Mathew started the project when moral policing was developing as a social issue in Kerala. Though moral policing led to various protests including Kiss of Love and placed in the headlines, it still continues strongly in the society. Sometimes, police are also behaving like moral police.
In such a situation, Mammootty starrer Uncle have great significance. We can definitely find it as a mirror to the shameful side of the society that suspect every relationship as something immoral.
Moreover, the movie promotes the need to question the people who acts as moral police. The movie represents the mothers who believe honour or reputation is not something that should collapse all of a sudden.
Muthumani, who portrayed a mother’s role in the movie, is a voice of such mothers and women who represent women empowerment in the background of social media campaigns like ‘I am not just a number’. So mothers and girls will like the movie as they can relate it to their life.
Mammootty plays the role of KK aka Krishna Kumar and Joy Mathew is seen as KK’s friend Vijayan in this movie. Even though the story develops from a small thread it concludes with a socially relevant issue.
The movie starts with the character Sruthy, a student. Sruthy, who studies at Ootty and on the way to Kozhikode got stuck in the town due to an unexpected hartal in Tamil Nadu. When she gets confused without getting bus, coincidentally she meets her father’s friend KK. The story develops when she starts her journey to Kozhikode in KK’s car.
But the journey disturbs Sruthy’s father as KK does not have a good image in their friends’ circle. The movie narrates the experience of KK and Sruthy on their trip. In this sense, Uncle is a road movie too.
Mammootty has broken his superhero image for the movie and it makes it more interesting. But sometimes we feel his clean image is affecting the movie.
Though Mammootty fans would not expect something negative from him, this fact turns out to be a reason for not making the people to be tensed while watching the movie.
The movie should keep the audience in the grip of tension. But it fails to accomplish it.
Joy Mathew has written the story and screenplay of the movie after the movie titled ‘Shutter’. Uncle is a reflection of Joy Mathew’s response on many incidents that he expressed on social media.
The excellent cinematography by Azhakappan make the film a visual treat for the audience.
Performance of Mammootty, Joy Mathew and Muthumani is appreciated by the audience. A song sung by Mammootty is another element that make the movie more special for the audience.
Hence, director Girish Damodar with his debut movie ‘Uncle’ made the audience happy and hopeful as a good director.
