Honour killing blows the gaff on casteism in society, explores ‘Birds and Brothers’
We especially Keralites are proud as an educated and progressive society. But cases of honour killing have been increasing in our state. But only few cases like Kevin murder case are discussed in media. Apart from a crime, honour killing reflects the mindset of the people who still cling to casteism. According to the available data, over 1000 honour killings are taking place in India every year. Roopesh Kumar’s latest short film ‘Birds and Brothers' is an artistic attempt to address ‘honour killing’ which became a disgrace to our society. Unfortunately, the hasty move to protect honour of a family is not only destroying life of a person but also harming the dreams and lives of many people who hope for a better future.
No one can forget the face of Neethu who was found weeping near the dead body of Kevin. This 20-minute-long short film is a dedication to many girls like Neethu who were forced to lead a life of a widow at a young age due to their own family.
‘Birds and Brothers' is inspired by many incidents like the Kevin murder case. Unfortunately, discrimination towards the lower caste is continuing in our society which is claiming as secular and educated one. A rich upper-caste family will not let a girl or boy in their house get married to someone from a lower caste, said the director.
“I think Indian society is a very hypocritical society. Most people still find family’s status as important in their life especially in the case of marriages. Because of this, matrimonial sites and newspapers have been encouraging marriage between the same caste. The matrimonial ads inviting proposals from families except SC/ST prove the caste discrimination is prevalent in our society,” he added.
‘Birds and Brothers’ clearly depict the life of many people who turn victims of honour killing. When someone kills a person, it is not going to put an end to the problems. Death brings new chapters in many lives. The memories and the pain will haunt those minds who lose a person close to their heart, examines the short film.
‘Birds and Brothers' make us think about such lives who experienced or turned victims to honour killing. It portrays the life of the girl who lost her husband in honour killing. When her brother and relatives kill her husband to protect the honour of their family and bring her back home, they didn’t show the patience to realize that they are destroying the girl’s life.
Here, we can examine how feelings like pride and love make a shift to negative emotions like anger and revenge.
Silesh K and Linisha Gopi played the pivotal roles in the short film.
Rather than presenting the story as a melodrama or social issue, Roopesh Kumar, who has written and directed the short film, tried to give such insights into the life of the people who are affected by the honour killing.
“I don’t want to give a message to the society through the film. It is just an artistic experiment,” said Roopesh Kumar.
He also experimented with a new style in narrating the story. A non-linear pattern is used in this short film.
The short film was officially released on the YouTube Channel ‘Ace Pics’.
