Chalakkudikkaran Changathi: No Justice to Mani | Movie Rating: 2/5
The director of the movie ‘Chalakkudikkaran Changathi’ had promised that the movie would portray the life of the talented actor Kalabhavan Mani who had a sudden demise. But, the first watch reveals that it isn’t a biopic. The movie is a typical fiction based on the real life of Mani. At the same time, it reminds us of our well-acquainted Kalabhavan Mani. The movie has to be evaluated from two aspects, one as a life history and second as a film. To tell the truth, the film is not a success in both the aspects.
Though the names could be changed, the movie tells the eventful life of Mani. It has a plot that interweaves the stories that Mani told many times and the story of his death which left untold. When Vinayan narrates the stories told by Mani overloading it with humility and goodness, the story of death is presented in an exaggerated manner. The climax of the movie has the versions on Mani’s death.
The script or the presentation does not have the strength to mark the life of a multitalented person like Kalabhavan Mani. His life was limited to the good deeds that he did for his village. Vinayan seems to be at a loss to decide what to tell and where to begin while portraying the journey of an actor who was born into a dalit family . The director also fails to present the struggles of the hero who was a mimicry artist and folk singer in a convincing way. The mysteries surrounding the death of the actor also couldnt be handled properly.
Each one in the film industry has a dupe. The film sets which are formed by these dupes create a different world. When many scenes are aimed at teasing others, the real story of Mani remains untouched.
Senthil, the lead actor has acted as Kalabhavan Mani. Though his face showed a lack of confidence, his performance should be appreciated. The casting of the hero has not gone wrong. Salim Kumar, Dharmajan, Joju, Vishnu Govindan, Honey Rose and Kottayam Nazeer have also performed prominent roles. A film on Mani mustn’t be like this. The life story of that hero wasn’t this much trivial.
