Mammootty has performed in a couple of superhit cop movies. Portraying a cop is his cup of tea. The same skill has led him to the character of Abraham Derick in Abrahaminte Santhathikal. Shaji Padoor has incorporated fight sequences that surpass Bollywood movies, car chasings and all elements needed to arouse the audience in his directorial debut.
Derick Abraham, son of Abraham begins to act when the law fails. Six people in two families were brutally murdered in consecutive days. The police endeavoured day and night to catch the criminal. Yet, he arrived on dark, rainy days. Derick had to face several challenges when the police assigned the case to him. Being a hunter or victim was equally dangerous in that adventurous journey. He chose to become the hunter. The film progresses with the incidents that follows from his choice.
The first half of the movie focusses on police family story rather than action. Derick was an officer who went beyond his responsibilities and position while investigating a case. This nature earned him several enemies within and outside the department. He is a person who possesses exceptional physical and intellectual skills. The way he chooses is unpredictable. This quality of Derick creates the suspense in the second half of the movie. The first half is progressing through two stories. It is the second story that leads to the climax.
Though the movie doesn’t have any outstanding quality to point out, it will enthuse the audience who expects an action movie. Shaji Padoor who has worked as the assistant director under Joshiy, Shaji Kailas, and Renji Panicker reminds us of all his teachers in each shot of his debut. He has demonstrated the skill of an experienced director in the movie.
Anson Paul who acted as Abraham’s brother has done a good job. The performances of Siddique, Renji Panicker, Shyamaprasad, Kalabhavan Shajohn, Tarushi, Kaniha, Suresh Krishna, IM Vijayan, and Sijoy Varghese are also worth a mention.
Cinematography by Alby is the main highlight of the movie. Gopi Sundar stimulated the audience with interesting background music. We have seen movies which tell similar stories in Malayalam and Tamil. But, novel presentation style is what makes the movie attractive. A screenplay with many loopholes intended for mere entertainment is the only minus of the movie.
