‘Unda’, a realistic movie on police
Mammootty starrer ‘Unda’ based on the story of cops who are engaged in countering Maoists in Chhattisgarh is running successfully in theatres. ‘Unda’ is not a mass movie like Mammootty’s last one ‘Madhuraraja’. It portrays the life of some ordinary policemen.
Mammootty is playing the role of an ordinary police sub inspector Manikandan in this movie.
Director Khalidh Rahman has managed to keep the realistic touch throughout the movie like its teaser and trailer.
Unda portrays the life of a group of policemen from Idukki KAP battalion camp who are deployed for election duty in Maoist-affected areas of Chhattisgarh. The movie narrates their panic and survival.
Mammootty and his team who represents Kerala Police arrives Bastar which is notorious for police-Maoists encounters and poverty. Mammootty plays the role of Manikandan who is one of the leaders of the three groups of Kerala Police.
In the movie, Mammootty is seen as a typical ordinary policeman who is struggling under different limitations.
Unda is not a typical police movie which narrates the story with mass scenes and action sequences. This is the story of some ordinary policemen and their mental pressure while working in a situation which is completely strange to them.
The whole team of Kerala police including Mammootty’s character Manikandan have never arrested a thief or killer in their career. Hence, election duty in Maoists-affected place provide challenges to this team. This challenge makes the movie more interesting for the audience.
The movie also highlighted important social problems including racial discrimination and troubles created by Maoists.
Mammootty fans will be mesmerised to watch the realistic performance of the actor in the movie. Though he has played many police roles, Mammootty’s police character in ‘Unda’ will be a special one in his career.
Shine Tom Chacko, Jacob Gregory, Arjun Asokan, Dileesh Pothan, Kalabhavan Shajon, Dr Rani and Sohan Seenulal are playing other lead roles in the movie. Asif Ali and Vinay Fort are seen in guest roles.
The script of Unda was penned by Harshad. Krishnan Sethukumar produced the movie under the banner of Movie Mill in association with Gemini studios. Cinematographer Sajith Purushothaman, music director Prasanth Pillai and editor Nishad Yusuf also associated with the movie.
Wayand, Kasaragod, Mysuru and Chattisgarh were the major shooting locations of ‘Unda’.
The reviews of audience revealed that Unda didnot miss its target to entertain the audience.
