'Sleeplessly Yours' takes you through weird and romantic sleepless nights
'Sleeplessly Yours' is a Malayalam film created by a bunch of amateur youngsters. However, the movie is a brilliant piece of art that showed expertise and creativity. It is directed by debutants Sudeep Elamon and Goutham Soorya. Goutham has penned the script as well. Being focused on a crazy couple, it unfolds a dreamy and fragmented love tale.
Jessy and Manasi are two individuals who fall in love with each other. Manasi (Devaki) is a yoga instructor and Jessy (Sudev Nair) is an amateur documentary filmmaker. Manasi shares the idea of staying sleepless for a few days and the couple take up this mad adventure. The story unveils the consequences the couple faces after the infinite nights of being together. They have a living together relationship and only a few people occasionally step into their sleepless life. Jessy is always striving to make sense of their senseless relationship which seems weird to the normal world.
Just like the fragmented mental state of individuals deprived of sleep, the movie also has a disoriented progress. Non-linear editing was used to convey the internal struggles of the couple. The background score, composed by Arun Varghese, was haunting just like sleeplessness haunts the protagonists.
Popular actor Sudev Nair has given life to Jessy in a realistic way. Devaki could capture the woman character, which is comparatively a new breed in Malayalam cinema. She is in love with freedom more than anything else. While being independent and not willing to be in the 'closeness' of a relationship, her inner self craves to live with Jessy forever. She is a lady of bipolar nature, senstive yet strong, free from all bonds yet struggling from some ties of past. A viewer can at times, connect Manasi with Tessa in 'Charlie'.
The movie is also a reflection of the changing trends in the relationships of the new generation. It shows the casual relationships between couple and the confusion to be in a normal, closed and formal institution called marriage. However, it doesn't make any comments or observations. It is open for interpretation of the audience. It also has an open ending which leaves immense scope for the viewer to imagine. As the first movie of a young team, 'Sleeplessly Yours' certainly is a great beginning. These sleepless nights are worth your time.
