As Dhanush fans were eagerly waiting for the second arrival of Maari, director Balaji Mohan has made a mass entertainer for the audience. The movie which progresses with action, romance and comedy in the attractive presence of Dhanush, Sai Pallavi and Tovino Thomas will entertain the audience till the end.
Maari 2 kicks off with the entry of Beeja, the main antagonist played by Tovino Thomas. The director has tried to create an impressive villain through the long curly hair, false tooth and tattoos. Even when the villain keeps on saying that he is the god of death, he turns out to be a cliché despite the weird costume. The plot focusses on the villain’s revenge to Maari who has destroyed his life.
Like the usual gangster movies, the plot revolves around drug war. The movie has an engaging first half which will thrill the audience with the entry of Maari with slow-motion stunt sequences, actions and punch dialogues. Sai Pallavi and Krishna have played two new important characters in the film. While the love for pigeons showed the softer side of Maari in the first part, here romance with Anandhi (Sai Pallavi) serves the same. Kalai (Krishna) is the best friend of Maari.
When compared to the first half which proceeds with many twists and suspense, the latter half is a bit slow. However, the director has succeeded in keeping the audience on the edge of their seats without dragging the story. Sai Pallavi has gone over and above the stereotypic heroine to establish herself. Anandhi is equally important in the plot as Maari. The chemistry between them makes the movie more beautiful.
Tovino has showcased a decent performance in his Tamil debut. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar and Krishna played significant roles. Except the stylish choreography, Yuvan Shankar Raja’s songs fail to touch the heart. But, the excellent background score has certainly contributed to the feel. Maari has made a powerful re-entry with all ingredients necessary for a mass entertainer. The movie is far superior to the first part which was weakened with a predictable plot and cliché scenes. ‘Maari 2’ will never disappoint fans who long for a mass Dhanush film.
