Thiruvananthapuram: The 27th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) ended on Saturday with the Bolivian Film 'Utama' bagging Suvarna Chakoram for the best film. However, the closing ceremony saw an embarrassing moment after some audience booed at director Ranjith, who is the chairman of Chalachitra Academy that organises IFFK.
The director was booed seconds after he walked into the podium to deliver a speech on the stage.
However, Ranjith started the speech by questioning whether the reaction from the audience was a welcoming gesture or just boos. He said he won’t be dispirited by such actions, he added. The director also said that a journalist friend had warned him about a portion of the audience reacting in this way.
Earlier, several people had stated protest after seats were denied to people who arrived for the screening of Lijo Jose Pellissery's Mammootty-starrer film 'Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam'. Some of them were slapped with charges like attempting to riot by the police. However, Ranjith later said that the academy had not filed any complaint.
He thanked the audience for making the festival a grand success. He also took a jibe at protestors. "The movie starring Mammootty will be released in theatres soon. Let us see how many people will be watching the movie," he said.
