The Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) has come up with a social media post severely criticising actor Alencier Ley Lopez for his misogynistic remarks at the Kerala State Film Awards ceremony the other day.
Taking to Facebook, WCC stated that Alencier’s words had completely undermined the chief minister’s inaugural address wherein the leader directed the film industry not to encourage the trend of celebrating misogyny and violence against women.

“To have such statements from a state film award winner, who should be an example to the general public, insulting the women community and artistes, is tantamount to undermining the works of cultural activists who have strived for the upliftment of women,” WCC wrote.
The collective also condemned the actor’s remarks and opined that this is not the first time that Alencier has made such “sexist” remarks. He invited controversy after he said that male sculptures should be given at film awards instead of female statuettes.
“Special Jury Award winners should be presented with a gold-plated statuette. Do not tempt us with this female sculpture. In a state with a manly chief minister, give us a sculpture with masculine strength,” he said.
He further added that the award money was insufficient and addressing the award jury chairman Goutam Ghose, he said: “Don’t insult me and Kunchacko Boban by giving a mere Rs 25,000. Please increase the (award) amount.”
