While Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Mammootty starrer ‘Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam’ continues to garner positive responses among viewers, Tamil director Halitha Shameem has come to the fore, levelling plagiarism allegations against the movie.

According to her, there are a lot of similarities in the aesthetics of ‘Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam’, and her 2021 release, Aelay, featuring Samuthirakani and K Manikandan in lead roles.

“Stealing all the aesthetics from a film isn't acceptable. You can dismiss my film Aelay, but I'll not be quiet if the ideas and aesthetics from it are mercilessly ripped off,” she wrote in a Facebook post.

The post soon gained attention, and several people expressed solidarity with the director. Some even pointed out the similarity between the posters of both films.

Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam featuring several actors such as Ramya Pandyan, Ashokan, Kainakary Thankaraj, Suresh Babu, Chetan Jayalal, and Rajesh Sharma among others, is co-produced by Mammootty along with Pellissery.

The movie, which had its world premiere at the 27th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), hit theatres on January 19, 2023.
