‘Summer in Bethlehem’ was to be shot in Tamil, reveals Sibi Malayil

Mohanlal and Sibi Malayil

The 1998 movie ‘Summer in Bethlehem’, directed by Sibi Malayil and scripted by Ranjith, was a super hit back then. Sibi Malayil said that the film was initially meant to be shot in Tamil and that he had Kamal Hassan in mind for the character of Niranjan played by Mohanlal in the movie.

"My memories flood with colours when I think of Summer in Bethlehem", he said while interacting with Club FM in the Star Jam programme.

"It was not a movie but just like an excursion with family and a bunch of friends," recollected the director.

“We commenced shooting of ‘Summer in Bethlehem’ in Tamil with Jayaram, Prabhu and Manju Warrier. But the shooting had to be stopped midway due to the financial crisis faced by producers. Then it was decided to shoot the movie in Malayalam. Suresh Gopi replaced Prabhu in the movie,” he said.

“Had considered Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth for Niranjan’s character. Mohanlal was in Bengaluru during that time and we thought we would try our luck. We had not revealed during the promotion that Mohanlal was playing a guest role in the movie,” he added.
