Nedumudi Venu, Sathyan Anthikkad

Remembering the veteran actor Nedumudi Venu, director Sathyan Anthikkad shared his most cherished memories with him at the 26th International Film Festival of Kerala. He was speaking in the programme ‘Unforgettable Venuchettan’, organised to commemorate the acting genius.

Sathyan Anthikkad recollected the incident that brought about a rift in their relationship and how it patched up later. The shooting of a Sathyan Anthikkad film was charted abroad and Nedumudi Venu who was one of the major cast in the movie could not turn up for it. The shooting had been cancelled as Sathyan Anthikkad could not find a substitute for Nedumudi. Later Sathyan Anthikkad did not commit to any movies with the senior actor.

When they both met after many years, Nedumudi said to him, “ Only 12 years of imprisonment is to be sentenced to a person who killed someone. But now it has been 14 years and I have not killed anyone…” By this statement wrapped up in humour, a rupture that lasted for years melted away.

From the movie ‘Veendum Chila Veettukaryangal’, Nedumudi again appeared in the films of Sathyan Anthikkad. Nedumudi had befriended Sathyan Anthikkad with Bharath Gopi and later they cooperated for many movies, added the director. He commemorated that Bharath Gopi and Nedumudi Venu were the stalwarts who paved a new path of acting in Malayalam cinema.
