Tinder Swindler documentary, Nirupama Rajendran

Malayalis have a reason to take pride in the recent announcement of the nominees for the Emmy Awards 2022 because Nirupama Rajendran, a young woman hailing from Thrissur, has made it all the way to the big list. Nirupama, a Sound Effects Editor based in London, has been nominated in the category of 'Outstanding Sound Editing For A Nonfiction Or Reality Program' (Single Or Multi-Camera). The nomination is for her exceptional work in the British crime documentary film ‘The Tinder Swindler’ which premiered on Netflix. She is the daughter of Guruvayur natives Rajendran and Smitha.

‘The Tinder Swindler’, a Felicity Morris directorial, is a gripping true-crime documentary depicting the life of a conman Shimon Yehuda Hayut with the pseudonym ‘Simon Leviev’ who cheated many women on Tinder, the dating app. Claiming to be the son of the billionaire and Russian-Israeli diamond mogul Lev Leviev, Simon would lure women into his trap, persuade them to lend him huge sums of money to help out with his financial constraints, and swindle millions of dollars.

The film which was released on February 2, 2022, garnered a plethora of praises for its making and hit the top 10 on Netflix in over 100 countries. Simon was sentenced to two years of prison in Finland in 2015, and 15 months of prison in Israel in 2019. Currently, he lives as a free man in Israel. However, Tinder banned him from the app after the release of the documentary.
