‘Bheemante Vazhi’, directed by Ashraf Hamsa starring Chemban Vinod Jose and Kunchacko Boban, was released last week. Kunchacko Boban talks about his journey in the film industry.

Bheemante Vazhi- Let’s talk about the curious title

The movie is about a dispute over a path. The protagonist calls everyone by the name ‘Bheema’. Eventually, the locals also started calling him ‘Bheema’. The movie is based on a real-life experience of one of Chemban Vinod’s friends. It is a light movie with romance and comedy. The movie was shot in Kuttippuram and neighbouring areas and offers a sort of freshness.

Chackochan’s entry into the movie

Ashraf and Chemban narrated the story to me. It was a heavy subject when the first time they presented it. I asked them if it was possible to change the course of the movie a bit as the proposed way was tricky. A small thread presented by Chemban led to the movie 'Bheemante Vazhi'. I liked the story when I heard it and felt that people also would enjoy the movie and its characters. It was easy to bring the film to life as it was based on a real-life experience.

Both Nizhal and Nayattu were released in theatres first and later streamed on OTT platforms. The reaction of people who watched the movie on both platforms.

Nizhal and Nayattu were released when the fear of Covid-19 kind of started to die down. However, due to lockdown, both the movies had to be pulled out from the theatres before they got the reception they deserved. When releasing a movie on OTT, the business risk is comparatively less and the greatest advantage is that it reaches people all around the world. Many people from foreign countries phoned me up to tell their reviews about Nizhal and Nayattu. Both platforms have their advantages and disadvantages. We lose the theatre experience when movies shrink to small screens.

Have you become more selective about the kind of roles you do?

I give importance to how much the story tempts me. I also try not to repeat similar roles. Praveen Michael in Nayattu is only one of the lead characters. Fewer dialogues or not being the protagonist does not prompt me to turn down movies. My characters in 'How old are you?' and 'Take Off' make me happy. I believe that appearing in movies that are loved by the audience even if it is in a small role is a great thing.
