Irrfan Khan, who won over millions of fans with his roles in numerous international, Indian films and TV serials, is no more. A statement by his official spokesperson has confirmed the demise of the 53-year-old actor on Wednesday.
Expressing condolences to Irrfan Khan's family, filmmaker Shoojit Sircar tweeted Wednesday morning: "My dear friend Irfaan. You fought and fought and fought. I will always be proud of you.. we shall meet again.. Condolences to Sutapa and Babil.. you too fought, Sutapa you gave everything possible in this fight. Peace and Om shanti. Irfaan Khan salute."
Shoojit Sircar had directed Irrfan in his 2015 movie "Piku" which also starred Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan.
Actor Amitabh Bachchan took to Twitter to console the death of his colleague.
“T 3516 - .. just getting news of the passing of Irfaan Khan .. this is the most disturbing and sad news. An incredible talent .. a gracious colleague .. a prolific contributor to the World of Cinema .. left us too soon .. creating a huge vacuum .. Prayers and duas” he wrote.
Director-Producer Karan Johar also consoled the death of his actor friend and noted “Thank you for those indelible movie memories....thank you for raising the bar as an artist ...thank you for enriching our Cinema....we will miss you terribly Irrfan but will always always be immensely grateful for your presence in our lives.....our cinema....we salute you”.
Actor Prakash Raj tweeted “Extremely painful.. Ahh ..too early Irfan.. thank you for your contribution to the collective global art .. we will miss you . RIP”.
Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma remembered Irrfan as an inspiration and wrote “With a heavy heart I post this tweet . A phenomenal actor, such an inspiration his performances have been for me . He battled for his life but sadly leaves us today . RIP Irrfan Khan . OM Shanti”.
Actress Priyanka Chopra wrote “The charisma you brought to everything you did was pure magic. Your talent forged the way for so many in so many avenues.. You inspired so many of us. #IrrfanKhan you will truly be missed. Condolences to the family.”
Actor Akshay Kumar also took to Twitter to mourn the death of Irrfan and wrote, “Such terrible news...saddened to hear about the demise of #IrrfanKhan, one of the finest actors of our time. May God give strength to his family in this difficult time ”.
Meanwhile, actress Kajol noted “Saddened to hear of the passing of Irrfan Khan. My heart goes out to the family, may you find strength in this time. Rest in peace”.
Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt remembered the song he shared with the deceased actor and wrote “Maine dil se kaha, dhoond laana khushi Nasamajh laya gum, to yeh gum hi sahi...Remember singing this song holding his hand when I met him after he was diagnosed. He smiled .The warmth of your smile will forever linger my friend. Alvida dost”.
Actress Manisha Koirala tweeted "you will live through you brilliant work in our hearts for forever, you are irreplaceable dear friend ..our conversations on spirituality, books, films..will remain with me as a treasure #IrrfanKhan #RestInPeace".
Many of the Tamil actors like Dhanush also consoled his death. “Heartbroken by the news, what a great talent and a wonderful human being we have lost. I will always remember his kind words to me. There is a better place and I know he is there. My deepest condolences to his family and dear ones. May his soul rest in peace”.
Mollywood actors like Nivin Pauly, Aju Varghese and actor-director Nandita Das also condoled the death of the incredible actor Irrfan Khan.
Politicians like Rahul Gandhi and Smriti Irani also condoled the death of the actor.
The actor has been ailing ever since he was diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumour a while back, and has been under medical attention for the same. He even went abroad for treatment. On Tuesday, Irrfan was admitted to Mumbai's Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital with a colon infection. Although a statement issued by his spokesperson in the early hours of Wednesday had dispelled rumours about his health condition, the confirmation of his demise came later in the day.
On the work front, Irrfan Khan was last seen in "Angrezi Medium", last-released Bollywood film before COVID-19 forced complete shutdown of cinema halls. "Angrezi Medium" ran in theatres for just a day before halls all over India were shut down.
