Drishyam and CBI 5

The Malayalam film industry has recorded many sequels to various movies. From Mohanlal’s ‘Drishyam 2’ to Mammootty’s upcoming movie ‘CBI 5- The Brain’, sequels always received a warm welcome from the audience. Let’s take a look at the major sequels produced in Malayalam.

CBI 5 – The Brain

Megastar Mammootty’s upcoming movie ‘CBI 5-The Brain’ is the fifth in the CBI series of his character Sethurama Iyer CBI. The movie will hit the theatres on May 1. ‘Oru CBI Diary Kurippu’ released in 1988 was the first movie in this series. A sequel to the movie titled ‘Jagratha’ was released in 1989. ‘Sethurama Iyer CBI’ released in 2004 and ‘Nerariyan CBI’ released in 2005 were the third and fourth parts of the CBI series.

Drishyam 2

‘Drishyam 2’ starring Mohanlal was one of the most celebrated sequels in the Malayalam film industry. The crime thriller directed by Jeethu Joseph was the sequel to ‘Drishyam’ released in 2013. The movie portrayed the story of Georgekutty and his family who struggles to survive the consequences of an accidental crime.

Inspector Balram

The movie starring Mammooty and directed by IV Sasi was released in 1991 as a sequel to the 1986 film ‘Aavanazhi’. The crime thriller portrayed Mammootty in the title role of inspector Balram. The movie was followed by another sequel titled ‘Balram vs Taradas’ in 2006.

August 15

The crime thriller directed by Shaji Kailas featured Mammootty as Crime Branch DySP Perumal. ‘August 15’ released in 2011 is a sequel to the 1988 film ‘August 1’.

Chenkol

Mohanlal’s ‘Chenkol’ directed by Sibi Malayil was a sequel to his 1989 film ‘Kireedam’. The movie which was released in 1993 portrayed the story of Sethumadhavan who turns a criminal.

Ravanaprabhu

The action drama which marked the directorial debut of Ranjith was a sequel to the 1993 film ‘Devaasuram’ directed by IV Sasi. ‘Ravanaprabhu’ released in 2001 portrayed Mohanlal in dual roles of Mangalassery Neelakandan and his son Karthikeyan.

Pattanapravesham (1988)

The detective comedy film released in 1988 was directed by Sathyan Anthikkad. The movie is a sequel to the 1987 film ‘Nadodikattu’, a social satire which discussed unemployment and related issues of youth. Mohanlal and Sreenivasan featured the pivotal roles of Dasan and Vijayan in these movies.
‘Akkare Akkare Akkare’ (1990) directed by Priyadarshan is the third movie in this series.

Bharatchandran IPS

The action drama released in 2005 is directed and produced by Renji Panicker. The movie which featured Suresh Gopi in the title role is a sequel to the 1994 film ‘Commissioner’. The movie portrayed the story of an honest police officer who fights against the corrupt political system in the state.

2 Harihar Nagar

The comedy thriller movie released in 2009 written and directed by Lal is a sequel to ‘In Harihar Nagar’ (1990). The movie featured the story of four friends played by Mukesh, Siddique, Jagadish and Ashokan. ‘In Ghost House Inn’, a horror-comedy film released in 2010 is the third installment in the ‘Harihar Nagar’ franchise.

Mannar Mathai Speaking

Mannar Mathai Speaking, a comedy film was released in 1995 as a sequel to the 1989 film ‘Ramji Rao Speaking’ directed by Siddique and Lal’. The movie portrayed the adventures of three characters named Mannar Mathai, Balakrishnan and Gopalakrishnan. Innocent, Sai Kumar and Mukesh played the lead characters in the movie. A third part in the series titled ‘Mannar Mathai Speaking 2’ directed by Mamas K Chandran was released in 2014.

Kurukshetra

A war film written and directed by Major Ravi portrayed Mohanlal as Major Mahadevan. The movie released in 2008 is a sequel to ‘Keerthu Chakra’ which hit theatres in 2006. The third film in the series was ‘Kandahar’ (2010) and the fourth one was ‘1971: Beyond Borders (2017).

‘Aadu 2’

‘Aadu 2’ (2017) directed by Midhun Manuel Thomas featured Jayasurya as Shaji Pappan. The movie is the sequel to ‘Aadu 2’ released in 2015. The comedy film portrayed the story of Shaji Pappan and his friends. The makers have announced 'Aadu 3', as a sequel to 'Aadu 2'.

Honey Bee 2

Honey Bee 2: Celebrations released in 2017 featured Asif Ali and Bhavana in the lead roles. The movie directed by Lal Jr is a sequel to the 2013 film ‘Honey Bee’. 'Honey Bee 2' narrated the love story of Seban and Angel, their preparations for marriage and the conflicting opinions of two families belonging to different cultures.
