Anumita Nadesan, a twenty-year-old music enthusiast from Trivandrum has taken the internet by storm with her beautiful voice and immaculate taste in music. She has made melomaniacs and even casual netizens turn weak in their knees with her phenomenal music covers that are adorned with her gleeful signature smile. She talks about herself and music in an exclusive interview with Mathrubhumi.com

Tell us a bit about yourself and your love for music.

I was born and brought up in Trivandrum and I am currently pursuing a B.Des course in Hyderabad. I started learning Carnatic music around the age of six. I have recently started learning Hindustani music, which I have always found to be very intriguing. All the love from social media has been immensely overwhelming. I have always loved music and getting to do what I love has been absolutely amazing.

You posted your sensational ‘Jashn-E-Baharaa’ cover on Instagram last December which suddenly hoisted you into the social media celebrity stature. What has it been like?

That was so insane that I am still having a hard time processing it. I posted that cover video right before the 25th anniversary of my parents. The next day, I checked my profile and saw more than one lakh views and I was shell-shocked. That was my first ever reel. It was so overwhelming and felt very new to me. Now, I am expected to keep my followers entertained and feed them with new content every other day or so, which is something that stressed me out at first. But I have gotten the hang of it these days and I believe I have found the middle ground. I would say that my friends have had a huge part to play in this whole thing. My covers that get shared have helped me gain a lot of exposure.

Did you ever imagine that you’d get where you are right now?

Not many people know this but I had actually joined for a BA music course here in Trivandrum. Things were not looking up for me back then and I decided to drop out. Later, when I joined my college in Hyderabad, I had this epiphany of how much I love music. So, I picked up my guitar again and got to singing. That is also when the pandemic happened and I had to return home. The first Hindi cover I posted was O Rangrez from the movie Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. That song received a lot of love. Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor and Malayalam actress Anna Ben shared it and the video started to get noticed. People kept wanting more Hindi song covers. That’s when the whole reels thing came up. The reels had to be less than 30 seconds back then, so it was a real hustle finding bits of music that were worthy enough for those few seconds.

Have you ever considered bringing out originals in your voice?

Yes. There is a lot of stuff that I have planned this year. I have been working on something for a while now. Fingers crossed, my originals will be out in the next three months. That is something I am really looking forward to. I have features, playback projects, and singles coming up.

I enjoy composing and love creating something new. I work on my music every single night. I find myself constantly thinking about music and sometimes when something interesting comes up and I have to preserve that idea before it vanishes. So if I don't have my guitar with me, I make sure that I record it. I am so grateful that I’m surrounded by people who support me. My parents are my greatest pillars of strength and I wouldn’t have made it this far without them. My mom always used to accompany me to my music classes so that I did not miss out.

People know Anumita the singer, what is Anumita the person like?

I happen to be an introvert and am not very social. I feel that I’m much more productive when I’m alone. I like to indulge in something artistic, like drawing or painting. I also love reading.

Do you like playback singing?

Absolutely. I have always dreamed of working with the legends in the music field, so I am definitely looking forward to doing playback projects. I want to do that and also be an independent artist. I want both of these to just go in parallel with each other. I really want to explore everything and find my stable ground. Playback, as I understand it, takes a lot of effort and dedication. You have to be in tune with what the composer has in mind. I am getting there, you know, baby steps at a time. Many Malayalam playback singers have reached out to me after listening to my music. Gopi Sundar, Deepak Dev, and Bijibal have complimented my voice and that is something that has made me truly contented.

Anumita continues to bless thousands of ears with good music. Her unending love for music is evident in the way she speaks about it as if she’s a girl with a guitar floating in the universe of music. Oblivious to everything else. Oblivious to everything, but music.
