The aroma of the International Film festival of Kerala is brewing across the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram. Film enthusiasts across the world are flocking to the theatres in the town. Among the venues, Tagore theatre serves to be a podium for paying tribute to the legendary actor Sathyan, who is renowned for his ubiquitous acting skills.
The photo exhibition has been hosted by veteran film photographer R Gopalakrishnan in remembrance of the legendary actor Sathyan, on account of his 110th birthday. Gopalakrishnan has been serving in the film fraternity since 1979 and has taken more than two lakh photographs of famous actors in the Malayalam industry. Among the photographs, three photographs were taken by the photographer himself, and the rest of them are his rare collection adapted from the original negatives purchased from Chennai.
Cheruvilakathu Veetil Manuel Sathyanesan Nadar, generically known as Sathyan Master, is the pioneer of the Malayalam film fraternity and is famous for his realistic acting skills. Sathyan Master began his career as a school teacher, later moved to the British Indian Army, and then to the Travancore State police, before joining the film industry. The actor joined the industry at the age of 40 and withina span of 19 years, he was able to make a unique mark for his versatile acting. He acted in 150 films and each and every movie has served to be an industry hit.
“I owe a great sense of gratitude towards the Film academy for proving me with a space to exhibit the photographs of the legend Sathyan Master”, said R Gopalakrishnan, the host of the exhibition. He also added that that it is quintessential for any movie enthusiast to learn about Sathyan master and the traditional art of movie making.
Sathyan Master was a committed actor, whose willingness to be part of any movie as even a minor character is quite commendable. The actor gained fame for his audacity to take up any challenging role and his behavior towards his fellow actors and his fans.
The reception given by youngsters as well as elders is quite praiseworthy. It is evident from their glittering eyes, the radiation of curiosity to know about the legendary actor. The photographer himself claims that Sathyan master used to be the youth icon of his generation. The role played by him in taking the Malayalam industry to the perspective of world cinema is undeniable. The life of Sathyan master is a living textbook for any movie buff and the industry owes a lot for his contribution to its growth. More podiums should pave the way to honour Sathyan master for his incredible contribution to the industry.
