New Delhi: Tamil film ‘Koozhangal’ (Pebbles) directed by P S Vinothraj has been selected as the official entry to the 94th Academy Awards, the Oscar 2022.
The Award function is in March 2022 in the US.
The film is produced by Vignesh Shivan and Nayanthara under their banner Rowdy Pictures.
The story of Koozhangal is the relationship of a boy with his alcoholic father. Vinothraj has said that an incident that happened in his family inspired him to make Koozhangal.
Malayalam film Nayattu, Tamil film Mandela were among the 14 shortlisted films for the official entry. A 15-member panel headed by Malayalam director Shaji N Karun selected the movie.
Lijo Jose Pellisery’s Jallikattu contested for India in the 93rd Academy Awards. However, it did not make it to the final rounds. Koozhangal will now be scrutinised under the ‘Foreign Films’ category. The hopes will remain if it gets selected for the final round. The last time an Indian film was nominated for the awards was in 2001 for Aamir Khan-starrer Lagaan. However, it lost to the Bosnian war film ‘No Man’s Land’.
The last time a Tamil movie was selected by India to contest the biggest film awards was in 2016. Vetrimaaran’s Visaranai was the movie.
