Nedumudi Venu, the actor par excellence and the actor who rendered variant shades of emotions on the silver screen leaves behind a huge void impossible to fill. Here are his 10 breakthrough performances worth recalling.

1. His Highness Abdullah

The emperor of emotions, Nedumudi played the character of a king of lost glory in the musical thriller drama starring Mohanlal. The helplessness and fury of the Maharaja Udayavarma who was exposed to the treacherous plots of his kin were well depicted by the actor.

2. Margam

For enacting the role of a former militant communist revolutionary in the 2003 movie ‘Margam’, Nedumudi Venu has received Special jury mention of National Film Awards and the Kerala State Film Award for best actor.

3. Thenmavin Kombath

Nedumudi’s role in 'Thenmavin Kombath' stands out with the various shades of a character. Through Sreekrishnan, the actor proved that he is adept to exhibit humour, love, excitement and anger within a single character.

4. Chamaram

The Veteran actor was highly appreciated for the role he played in the iconoclastic movie Chamaram. The romantic relationship between a student Vinod and his lecturer Indhu was well personified by Nedumudi Venu and Zarina Wahab. He bagged the Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actor in this 1980 movie and it became one of the best movies in his career.

5. Bharatham

The musical drama featured a stunning performance of Nedumudi Venu and Mohanlal. Nedumudi’s flair to enact the songs is really praiseworthy and acknowledged as in ‘His Highness Abdullah’ and ‘Chithram’.

6. Odaruthammava Aalariyam

How can we miss the comedy movies in which Nedumudi Venu played a part? This movie had the best comic timings and made the viewers laugh throughout. The cat and mouse games between the uncle ( played by Nedumudi) and the youths of the neighbourhood and their competition in flirting with girls bring the house down.

‘Chithram’ One of the biggest hits in Mollywood marked the success of the duo Nedumudi Venu and Mohanlal as a team. The very special bond between Vishnu and Purushothama Kaimal evokes laughter in the audience. However, Kaimal could make the audience feel blue when he threatened and then begged to the prison warden (Soman) for Vishnu’s life.

8. Sarvakalasala

Sarvakalasala was a 1987 romantic comedy directed by Venu Nagavally. The character of Siddhan Aashan, an alcoholic bohemian poet was safe in the hands of Nedumudi Venu. Though his presence is limited to a few scenes, Nedumudi could successfully leave a mark in the movie.

9. Devasuram

The character Appukkutty Nair, father of Bhanumathy never dissipates in between the rivalry of Mangalassery Neelakandan and Mundakkal Sekharan. The frustrations of a failed artist and a frail father were well performed by him.

10. Sargam

Nedumudi Venu has substantiated with his performances that there is no one other than him to play the character in musical dramas of Malayalam. It is again evident in ‘Sargam’ directed by Hariharan’. In the movie, he enacted a Bhagavathar (music teacher) who bestowed music to many but failed to understand the potential and virtue of his own son Haridas (Vineeth). Sargam is an evergreen movie in Malayalam.
