Sharjah: Noted Mappilapattu singer Asma Koottayi passed away on Monday. She was 51. She had been undergoing treatment in Thrissur for a long time. She was a prominent presence in the Mappilapattu sector for nearly four decades.
Born into a family of musicians in Malappuram, Asma Koottayi entered the field of Mappilapattu at the age of five with the guidance of her father Chavakkad Khader Bhayi, a tabalist and singer Amina Beevi.
Koottayi is married to tabalist Mohammadali alias Bava. She was settled in Qatar along with her family for a long time and has performed at several musical events in UAE.
The talented singer has shared stage with numerous artistes including KT Mohammed Kutty (Tirurangadi), AV Muhammed, KG Sathar, Vidhu Prathap, P Jayachandran, Madhu Balakrishnan among others. She had also done playback for the movie ‘Love FM’.
