Padmapriya, Revathy ask A.M.M.A to reveal their stand on Edavela Babu's controversial statement
Actors Padmapriya and Revathy have written an open letter to the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes following the resignation of actress Parvathy from the association.
In the letter, the actors appreciated Parvathy for resigning from the association as a protest against Edavela Babu’s controversial statement on the actress who was attacked.
“The resignation tendered by our colleague Parvathy as a member from A.M.M.A has taken us back to a journey that began in 2018 with the survivors’ resignation. A journey embarked upon with a lot of pain but also with the hope of creating constructive awareness of issues of women as actors in the film industry. Those efforts have been effective in some ways because it created a space for discussions in the public forum that has never taken place before."
The only common thread missing every time in this process has been the unwillingness of the A.M.M.A leadership to engage and/or take constructive decisions or actions,” wrote Revathy and Padmapriya criticising A.M.M.A.
They also criticised Edavela Babu’s statement and condemned A.M.M.A for not taking action on the matter.
“Like in the past the recent interviews by the general secretary of A.M.M.A once again sets a dangerous example. An example that, some of the members in the A.M.M.A leadership can use their position to disparage a criminal investigation that is sub judice. An example that, as the only organisation in the film industry with close to 50 per cent women members, there will be no measures taken to protect, support and encourage them. Instead it appears that all efforts will be made to alienate and ridicule them and their issues in public. An example that, no matter how adverse a scenario A.M.M.A faces collectively as an organization, the entire leadership will stay quiet,” they added.
“It is time for first the A.M.M.A leadership to share their stand. Instead of questioning us, it is time they question themselves and share their views with all of us,” they demanded.
Padmapriya and Revathy also raised 3 questions to the association.
They sought the association leadership to reveal their stance on Edavela Babu’s statement.
The letter was forwarded to Mohanlal, K.B. Mukesh, Jagadish, Aju Varghese, Asif Ali, Baburaj Jacob, Honey Rose, Indrans, Jayasurya, Rachana Narayanankutty, Shwetha Menon, Sudhir Karamana, Tiny Tom and Unni Shivapal.
Actor Parvathy shared the letter on her Facebook page and wrote "My fellow warriors Padma Priya and Revathy setting ablaze the path that must be trodden! I have learned so much watching them tirelessly take on oppressive systems with ironclad determination. Thank you for being you! I am with you every step of the way!"
