Online release of Jayasurya’s next: Theatre owners in Kerala to boycott his films
Film Exhibitors Federation President Liberty Basheer declared that no movies of actor Jayasurya and producer Vijay Babu will be screened in any theatres in future. He was responding to mathrubhumi.com after Jaysurya and the filmmaker announced that their upcoming movie ‘Sufiyum Sujathyaum’ will be premiered via Amazon Prime Video amid the lockdown.
‘Sufiyum Sujathayum’ directed by Naranipuzha Shanavas is produced by Vijay Babu under the banner of Friday Film House.
Liberty Basheer criticized Jaysurya and Vijay of cheating the theatre owners when the film industry itself is in a huge crisis.
“Theatres in Kerala are shut for 67 days till date. Movies which were already released in theatres can be streamed online. It is not injustice. But when the whole film industry, including theatre owners, artists and other workers are facing a crisis amid the lockdown, some people are taking their movies to another platform. It is cheating towards the entire film industry,” criticized Liberty Basheer.
He raised a sharp criticism against producer Vijay Babu for taking the decision after making crores of profit from his movies.
He warned that if Vijay and Jayasurya stand firm in their decision on online release, their movies will not be screened in any theatres in Kerala.
“The Film Exhibitors Federation will boycott them. We will challenge everyone who will support Jaysurya and Vijay in this issue,” he added.
He noted that the theatre owners are hopeful that the coronavirus scare and lockdown will end soon and theatres will be opened by Onam.
“We will not take it as a serious issue if the producer is a debutant. But in this case the producer is a hit-maker. An artist will be a film star, if the movies are screened on theatres. If movies are released on OTT platforms, the actor will be a serial actor only and not a film star. The producers must think on the future of the stars while taking a decision on having OTT release for movies,” added Liberty Basheer.
He declared that the Film Exhibitors Federation will not compromise with any superstar who comes up with a digital release of their movie.
