Kochi: The eastern regions of Ernakulam district are likely to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours, forecasted the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). In view of this, residents of Kothamangalam taluk and low-lying areas adjacent to Periyar river have been advised to stay alert.
Ernakulam district Collector S Suhas directed officials concerned to alert the people in these areas using loud speakers. He also directed the people to shift to safer places like relief camps as a precautionary measure.
At the same time, mining activities are strictly prohibited in the district for the next two days. Presently, there is no chance for floods in Ernakulam, the Collector added.
“The water level in rivers have come down to normal and water level dams are not dangerous. There is no chance of flood in the district even if heavy rains continue to lash in the coming days,” he added.
The Collector was addressing the media after attending a meeting with officials of various departments at Aluva Palace on Tuesday.
He noted that there is no need to panic and the people in low-lying areas were directed to relocate to safer places as a precautionary measure.
