‘Atmanirbhar’ exposes the existential hazard of treating wives as doormats
Kozhikode: The ironically titled six and a half minute film ‘Atmanirbhar’ is creating waves on social media. Made under the banner of ‘Every Dog has its Day Productions’ by founderLijin Jose, he directs himself in the role of the job-obsessed husband, in for a rude awakening. Script-writer Archana Vasudev essays the role of a techie's wife, leading a quotidian life of drudgery and servitude. Mobile phones complete the domestic triangle in this short, which does without dialogues.
In the span that encapsulates a typical back-home-from-work-in-the-evening scenario is narrated a modern cautionary tale, in which a wife reduced to a humdrum doormat existence dishes out an ultimate feminine version of ‘self-reliance’ taken to its sexually vengeful extreme. The insensitive husband, who till then had inhabited his technological cocoon is confronted with a reality that shatters his world like a crack of doom as the wife hints through a text message that she is moving on.
The creative duo decided to participate in the Indian Film Project competition with ‘Brave new world’ for its theme, and which called for submissions to be completed within 50 hours. Lijin says that this compressed time frame forced cutting back on dialogues and editing. So visual narration, of which he was fond, seemed the way out. Similarly, multi-location shots too were time-consuming; so a single indoor sequence became the only option. The director of two feature films, ‘Friday’ and ‘Law point,’ has worked earlier with Archana, the founder of ‘Talkative’ that is into Talent Management, Brand Connection and Content Strategy.
Her original pre-Covid contagion concept ran into 10 minutes, requiring multiple locations and a host of characters. She discussed it with Lijin, but they settled for the current theme. A team of six was roped in immediately. Pre-production was done on conference calls and documents shared via Google docs. The film was shot in a day, with music and edit completed the next day, in an orchestration of team effort.
Liji and Archana are already planning their next project together.
