Pouly Valsan is an actor who stepped into cinema from drama through minor roles and finally won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Character Actress. She is unique by her natural way of acting. She has performed excellent supportive character roles in ‘Guppy’, ‘Leela’ and ‘Ee Ma Yau’.
Pouly entered cinema through Mammootty starrer ‘Annan Thambi’. She had acted with Mammootty in a drama long back. Pouly remembers that Mammootty was a tall and thin young man then. That young man has become a superstar in cinema. Pouly said that she never thought that Mammootty will remember her. She was talking at Mathrubhumi Kappa TV Happiness Project.
Pouly had a single dialogue in ‘Annan Thambi’. When Mammukka heard me say the dialogue, he asked Siddique, “The voice seems to be of a professional, who is she?”
“Her name is Pouly, she is an artist from Vypin Kara”. Siddique had seen my dramas since childhood and he knows me. Hearing this, Mammukka inquired why did she leave without speaking to me.
In fact, I didn’t speak to Mammukka because I was scared. What will I do if Mammukka doesn’t recognize me? We had acted together in drama in 1975. I would feel embarrassed if he doesn’t recognise me. I have never thought then that the young, slim boy will become a superstar in future.
Mammukka has mentioned my name in his autobiography which was given in a magazine. It also had my photo. It had a note on actor Pouly who acted in a drama named Sabarmati. I also had that photo but I lost it. Mammukka has kept it safe.
Pouly said that she had to face bad words from some people for acting in dramas. She couldn’t respond or even cry during those times. But, she said she is happy that she now has a better life through drama.
Ours was a love marriage. Both of our families opposed our marriage. We had brought up our children on our own. I will share an experience I had then. I had a drama performance and my son was suffering from fever. I had to take him with me as he was sick. I had to perform a romantic scene and my son was crying out loud. I laid him in a cradle below the stage. I could hear his cries during acting. I somehow completed the performance.
I sought help in a nearby house. An elder woman checked him and gave some medicines. I decided that I have to take him to the doctor next day morning. I was waiting near a tea stall early morning. One man said looking at me, “She has earned a child acting in dramas”. I was deeply hurt as I had to hear this when I was trying hard to earn a living. But, I could not respond then.
I was firm that I had to show them I can live well. I brought up my children. Though they are not so rich, they are good. They are so affectionate towards me. Drama has given me everything. I believe that God replied to the people who mocked me with the award- said Pouly.
