When Sachy talked about 'Ayyappanum Koshiyum'...
‘Ayyappanum Koshiyum’ directed by Sachy was the superhit movie released in 2020. The conflict between Prithviraj’s character Pattalam Koshy and Biju Menon’s SI Ayaapan entertained the audience. It was a mass movie with superb action sequences and punch dialogues.
In his last interview with Mathrubhumi, Director Sachy shared his expectations on ‘Ayyappanum Koshiyum’
Origin of ‘Ayyappanum Koshiyum’
At first, I planned a story on Koshy and his aged driver. Because, I had two friends like these characters. I knew the relationship between a jewellery owner and his driver. It developed the thread of the story. With SI Ayyappan Nair’s character, the story developed into a major twist. Apart from the story, the movie narrates many incidents. In simple words, I would like to call it as a movie of organic mass genre.
Ranjith as a producer
I have a good friendship with Ranjith for a long time. He knows my way of writing and interests. I used to add all elements to entertain the audience while crafting the script.
So, I think Ranjith was confident to produce my project. And finally, Ranjith and his friend PM Sasidharan decided to produce ‘Ayyappanum Koshiyum’.
Plot of Ayyappanum Koshiyum’
‘Ayyappanum Koshiyum’ narrated the story of the two characters who confront each other over a violation of the law.
SI Ayyappan who got only two years to retire from service and Koshi who served Indian Army as havildar for 17 years turn enemies after the latter gets arrested for an offence. The small issue became a fight or competition between the duo. The movie narrates the story of the two who refuse to withdraw from the fight.
Reunion with Prithviraj-Biju Menon
I am comfortable to work with Biju Menon and Prithviraj. Because, when we narrate the story, they conceive it in the same sense which I want to convey. In the first take itself, they act their scene with perfection. So I enjoyed the communication of each scene with them. ‘Anarkali’ was my directorial debut. Prithviraj played the lead role in the movie. Though Biju Menon played the hero in movies, he wanted himself to play the supporting role in ‘Anarkali’. Biju acted in the movie as he promised me that he will be part of my directorial.
In ‘Ayyappanum Koshiyum’, both are heroes and villains. I wanted to give priority to both characters and so I titled it as ‘Ayyappanum Koshiyum’.
We wanted to make ‘Ayyppanum Koshiyum’ as a different movie from my last movies. So, punch dialogues were added intentionally. The movie also talks on class war and politics for social justice.
About directing and writing for a movie
When we write for another director, we have to consider his interests and limitations. But while directing a movie in our own script, there is no need to worry about all these things. I am not planning to pen the script and direct movies together.
I think a director needs more discipline than a writer, added Sachy.
Sachy’s interest towards commercial movies.
Earlier, I was interested in film society activities and wanted to study in Pune Film Institute. During that time, I used to hate commercial movies. But leaving my film dreams, I opted my career as an advocate. When I made the debut in the film industry, I changed my opinion about films. Now, I consider film as a livelihood, said the director.
