Malayalam cinema is familiar for stories searching for blood relations. The success of a movie will be determined by the way the subject is approached. Tovino starrer ‘Ente Ummante Peru’ is a movie which stands out among them due to its novel treatment and narrating style. The movie directed by debutant Jose Sebastian presents the journey of a youngster to find his mother filled with humour and emotions. When Tovino plays Hameed, the audience can see a different style of acting. As he won the hearts of viewers through the innocent Hameed, he has again proved that 2018 is his year.
What was the main factor that attracted you to ‘Ummante Peru’?
The movie progresses through a beautiful relationship between a mother and son who haven’t recognized each other. The story is connected with an invisible string of affection, love and solitude. It also gives answers to how a mother should be and how a son sees his mother. The director had approached me before 2 years. He has prepared for years to do this movie. The movie was delayed due to some issues.
You trusted the debutant director Jose Sebastian?
Jose Sebastian is a talented artist who has completed a course in Writing and Direction from Sydney Film School. He had so many references about the cinematography, art direction, cast and costume of stars needed for this movie. He has such a professional approach. So, I was confident about him. The director’s 2-year-long home work has made this movie beautiful.
Was the Urvashi-Tovino combo highlight of the movie?
Urvashi is an artist whom all of us admire since the day we started to love cinema. We can also improve while working with such gifted artists. She could create a friendly atmosphere in the set soon as she reaches there. With that, our tension will reduce. We were able to create a good relation within a few hours of meeting. So, we enjoyed doing each scene.
Did you have to do any homework to become Hameed?
The director had a clear-cut idea about how Hameed should be. So, my job was easy. Whenever I chose a character, I would give him a unique fragrance. It is a technique like we connect the fragrance of soil with rain. I used the Ferrari perfume to reach Hameed.
Ente Ummante Peru portraying Tovino as hero and Tamil movie depicting you as villain hit theatres at the same time?
All these are unexpected luck. As an actor, I am so happy to see when all my actors are well received by the audience. This is an inspiration to search for such different roles.
You have done a villain role in Tamil when you are a hero in Malayalam. Don’t you think that it will affect your image?
I have entered Malayalam cinema in the role of a villain. I will do such roles if I am impressed by it. I don’t like to limit myself in a single image. Because, I am not afraid of image. Maari has got positive comments in Tamil. I got many roles after that, but most of them weren’t impressive.
The successful 2018 is ending, what are your new expectations?
I am hopeful about all of my movies. And the first among the list is Mohanlal starrer ‘Lucifer’, directed by Prithviraj. ‘Uyare’, ‘Luca’, ‘Kalki’, ‘Oscar Goes To’ and ‘Kilometres and Kilometres’ are also among them. I hope that all of them will entertain the audience. I have many other good movies in my dreams.
